Elon Musk’s SolarCity Corp. expands into the Charleston market
The nation’s largest solar energy installer has plugged the Charleston market into its expansion plans. The move by SolarCity Corp. marks its entry into South Carolina.
Co-founded by Elon Musk of Tesla Motors, SpaceX and PayPal fame, the company is leasing office and warehouse space in Ladson to house its Palmetto State operations, which will cover a triangular territory that reaches from Charleston to Columbia and down to the state line near Hilton Head Island.
San Mateo, Calif.-based SolarCity has started hiring employees and could employ 100 installers, surveyors and other workers. It will look to expand to other parts of the state “if things go well,” said Lee Keshishian, East Coast regional vice president.“Certainly the growth of the market here makes it attractive,” he said of the population gains in the Charleston region.SolarCity said its expansion into South Carolina was tied in part to a new financing option it introduced this summer in 14 states.
