Enel X to build 22-MW solar park at Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci Airport.
Enel X, a unit of Italian electric utility group Enel SpA (BIT:ENEL), has won a tender to install a 22-MW solar plant within Rome’s Fiumicino International Airport, also known as Leonardo da Vinci Airport.
The advanced energy services division of Enel secured the award in a competitive round held by airport operator Aeroporti di Roma (ADR). Its partner in the job to build the photovoltaic (PV) park will be domestic infrastructure company Circet Italia SpA, Enel X said on Friday, adding that the project is set to create Europe’s largest self-consumption solar plant.
Work is due to commence by the end of this year and will be completed in 2024.
To be installed parallel to runway 3 at Leonardo da Vinci Airport, the PV farm will cover a 340,000-sq m area and will be able to produce 32 GWh of electricity annually from 55,000 panels. The annual output will mitigate over 11,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per year, Enel X estimates.
The facility will be coupled with a 10-MWh energy storage system based on second-life electric vehicle batteries.
ADR is the operator of the Rome Fiumicino and Ciampino airports. The company is seeking to achieve zero CO2 emissions by 2030.
