Expected list of electric cars to debut at Delhi Auto: From MG 4 EV to Hyundai Kona EV – EQ Mag
Indian auto manufacturers are coming up with new battery-operated vehicles each year. However, India is still far behind in terms of EV infrastructure.
Nonetheless, people are slowly and steadily starting to accept EVs as a replacement for ICE cars. Although, mass-adoption of EVs will take a long time we can expect this segment to grow at a handsome rate in the years to come, especially due to the lower running costs offered by EVs.
In this article, we list down the expected list of electric cars that will debut at the Delhi Auto Expo.
Price cut = Comfort Compromises?
1. Tata Altroz EV
The most expected car to debut at Delhi Auto expo is the Tata Altroz EV. The company showcased this EV at the Geneva Motor show in 2019. The Tata Altroz EV is based on the same ALFA platform which is compatible with electrification.
The Tata Altroz EV is expected to borrow many features from the already launched Nexon EV such as the same electric powertrain, PDU (Power distribution unit) and battery pack. The car is expected to come with connected car technology which lets you access the car’s stats such as the remaining battery, and charging history and even locate the nearest charging stations for you.
2. Production spec Tata Curvv
The Tata Curvv concept was revealed in the country in April this year, based on an entirely new EV platform.
The coupe-styled concept is also based on Tata’s new design philosophy called ‘Less is More’ – which could be the host for all future Tata EVs to come. We expect Tata to showcase the Curvv concept at the 2023 Auto Expo in a slightly more production-ready form.
Tata had also revealed that the Curvv concept will result in a fully-electric vehicle first, followed by an ICE version later. The EV could have a range of around 400 – 500 km, however, the same is yet to be confirmed. What’s more, the Tata Curvv is actually capable of charging other electric vehicle.
3. Facelift Hyundai Kona
Launched in July 2019, the Hyundai Kona Electric was the first electric vehicle in India from Hyundai. Globally the Hyundai Kona electric was updated in 2020 and this model is expected to be showcased in 2023 Auto Expo.
The Hyundai Kona is expected to be powered by a 39.2kWh battery and a 136hp motor for a 304km range or a 64kWh battery and a 204hp motor for a 483km range. The electric SUV is expected to be priced at around Rs 24-26 lakhs.
4. Hyundai IONIQ 5
Hyundai recently announced that it will bring the IONIQ 5 to the Indian market.
Built on the Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) of Hyundai, the Ioniq 5 will arrive in India via Completely Knocked Down (CKD) route.
In terms of exterior, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 features 20-inch aerodynamically-designed alloy wheels, LED headlamps with DRLs, LED tail-lamps, flush door handles, shark-fin antenna and an integrated spoiler.
The upcoming Hyundai Ioniq 5 will likely be offered with two battery choices – a 58 kWh battery and a 77.4 kWh battery in the Indian market as well.
The powertrain will likely churn out a peak power of 305 hp and a max torque of 605 Nm. Both powertrains will be available in Rear-Wheel-Drive or All-Wheel-Drive configurations. The Ioniq 5 EV has a claimed range of 481 km.
5. MG Air EV
MG Motor India is all set to launch its second electric car, MG Air EV to the Indian market. The MG Air EV will be unveiled in India on January 5, 2023, and will also be showcased at Delhi Auto Expo. Talking about the MG Air, It’s a 2-door, 4-seater vehicle and essentially it’s the rebadged version of the Wuling Air EV currently on sale in Indonesia. To keep the price competitive, it is expected that MG will locally source the battery pack from Tata AutoComp.
The Air EV is smaller than three metres in length, it features an LED strip spanning the width of the front end, vertically stacked dual-barrel headlights, 12-inch steel wheels with stylised covers, and an LED bar at the rear. Moving on to the interior, the MG Air features leather upholstery with silver and black elements to make it look more premium. The car also features 10.25-inch digital screens for both infotainment and cluster, electronic parking brake, steering-mounted controls and connected car tech.
The MG Air is expected to be offered with two battery pack options 17.3kWh and 26.7kWh battery packs. The larger battery offers a claimed range of 300km, but the version with the smaller pack comes with a claimed range of 200km. The battery pack will be paired with an electric motor which produces 38 bhp of power.
Talking about the pricing, it is expected that the EV will be priced from Rs 8-10 lakh (ex-showroom). When launched, the Air EV will compete with Tata Tiago EV and Citroen C3 EV.
6. MG 4 EV
Another MG on the list is the MG 4 EV, the MG 4 EV is the company’s first fully-electric hatchback car and comes with a claimed range of up to 452 km on one full charge. The EV is offered two battery options. Talking about the features, it gets a 10.25-inch colour touchscreen with Apple car play and Android Auto and MG iSMART app connectivity. Globally, the MG 4 EV is available with two battery pack options – 51kWh and a larger 64kWh; the former produces 170hp of power while the latter produces 203hp. Torque output on both versions is rated at 250Nm and both come in a single-motor, rear-wheel drive configuration.
The MG 4 EV is available with two battery pack options, 51kWh and 64kWh battery packs, respectively. MG claims the smaller battery pack can return a range of up to 350km while the larger one gives 452km, both on the WLTP cycle. Safety features include MG Pilot ADAS systems including Active Emergency Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist and Driver Attention Alert as standard. The company is also offering Intelligent High Beam Assist and Speed Limit Assist as part of a simple, intuitive package of safety features that protects occupants and other road users.
