First Solar to Manufacture Solar Panels in India with No China Input, Says US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm – EQ Mag
US-based firm First Solar will invest billions of dollars for production of solar panels in India which will not depend on any materials from China. US energy secretary Jennifer Granholm said this at the India-US Strategic Clean Energy Partnership (SCEP) meet in New Delhi on 18 July, 2023.
India’s capabilities in scale will be complemented by the US’ contribution in terms of bringing in 17 laboratories and steps to incentivise production, which could be propelled by funding from the US Development Finance Corporation in the renewables area.
The US and India, in a strategic partnership, will endeavour to develop a multi-billion dollar investment platform to infuse capital and derisk support for such projects.
First Solar has responsibly produced eco-efficient advanced thin film photovoltaic (PV) modules, and is ranked among the world’s 10 largest solar manufacturers for being the only US-headquartered company which is not manufacturing in China.
Recently, during PM Modi’s US trip, the two nations committed to creating innovative investment platforms which attract international private finance for greenfield renewable energy, battery storage and novel green projects in India.
