In Short : The Finance Minister has announced a new Manufacturing Mission aimed at boosting India’s clean technology manufacturing sector. This initiative will focus on enhancing the production of renewable energy components, electric vehicles, batteries, and other green technologies. With financial incentives and policy support, the mission is expected to position India as a global hub for clean tech manufacturing, driving sustainable growth and job creation.

In Detail : The Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in her budget speech on Saturday announced the National Manufacturing Mission to boost India’s domestic value addition and build ecosystem for clean-tech manufacturing.

The FM in her speech said, “Our Government will set up a National Manufacturing Mission covering small, medium and large industries for furthering “Make in India” by providing policy support, execution roadmaps, governance and monitoring framework for central ministries and states. Given our commitment to climate-friendly development, the mission will also support Clean Tech manufacturing.”

She added that this will aim to improve domestic value addition and build our ecosystem for solar PV cells, EV batteries, motors and controllers, electrolyzers, wind turbines, very high voltage transmission equipment and grid-scale batteries.

China dominates in clean tech manufacturing in the world. India imports 80% of solar components, with only 20% sourced domestically. The reliance on imports is even higher in other sectors—85% for batteries, 75% for EV motors, and 80% for electrolyzers, with domestic production accounting for just 15%, 25%, and 20%, respectively.

“The Union Budget 2025 has strengthened India’s pledge to clean energy self-reliance by prioritizing domestic manufacturing, backward integration, skilling, and research & development. The announcement of the National Manufacturing Mission will support the rapid growth of the entire renewable energy ecosystem,” said Dr. Amit Paithankar, Whole-Time Director & CEO, Waaree Energies Ltd.

He added that the focus on clean-tech is heartening and with a strong push towards ‘Make in India’ evolving into ‘Make for India, Make for the World,’ these policy measures will drive capacity expansion, fortify supply chains, and position India as a global leader in clean energy manufacturing.
