GCG goes eco-friendly, installs solar panels

Ludhiana : Government College for Girls has gone eco-friendly with the installation of solar panels in the college today. The panels have been installed on the rooftop of the girls’ hostel at the college.
The 20 KV capacity solar panel units which became operational, a couple of days ago, are already helping to meet much of the power needs for the girls’ hostel.
Dr Mohinder Kaur Grewal, Principal of the college, said the solar panels will also save the electricity bill cost of the hostel. The project has taken more than a year to take place. The cost of the project after subsidy has been around Rs13 lakh , which otherwise would have cost around around Rs19 lakh, she said. The grant had been received from Rashtriya Uchhchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA), Dr Grewal said.
The solar panels have been installed with the help of Punjab Energy Development Authority (PEDA).
Dr Grewal said though the process took a long time, but she wanted to ensure that the process was complete here.
Buoyed by the performance of the solar power unit at the hostel, she said they have already requested for grant for installation of solar panels for the rest of the college also. She said because solar panels would not only help to cut down on the power bills, but they are also renewable source of energy, opting for solar energy being eco-friendly is the need of the hour.
Notably, University Grants Commission had directed that all colleges must harness solar power by installing rooftop solar power units around two years ago.
Notably, such solar panels have already been installed and functioning in Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College. The CBSE has also recently directed that all affiliated schools should get solar power units installed in schools.
