  • GECOL in Libya has announced the launch of the country’s 1st and the largest solar PV plant

  • TotalEnergies will implement the 500 MW PV facility in Al-Sadada region of the country

  • Up to 1.2 million solar panels to be installed are likely to generate close to 152 TWh of clean energy annually

  • The General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL) launched the largest solar PV project in the country with 500 MW capacity which is to be built by French energy major TotalEnergies in Al-Sadada region.

GECOL’s Chiarman of the Board of Directors termed the project the 1st and the largest solar plant in Libya to have been launched. It will be connected to the grid on completion.

The Sadada PV facility, under cooperation with the Renewable Energy Agency of Libya (REAoL), falls within GECOL’s strategic plans to expand the use of renewable energy on the grid.

According to local media reports, the plant is expected to generate up to 152 TWh of clean energy annually with the help of up to 1.2 million solar panels installed.

In November 2021, TotalEnergies signed agreements with Libya to develop PV facilities of 500 MW capacity and the power generated will be supplied to industrial facilities in Waha
