Financed by the German development agency KfW, 23 MW Diass Solar Power Plant has come online in Senegal and was recently inaugurated by the country’s President Macky Sall along with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
Located some 40 km from Senegal’s capital Dakar in M’bour department, the project is connected to the national grid operated by the Senegalse national electricity company Senelec, the Twitter account of the Sall’s office announced on May 23, 2022.
The project has a total of 8 inverters and 16 transformers along with 85,248 solar panels spread on 40 hectares of land. Senegal said it is the 8th solar power plant of its kind in the country.
According to the World Bank, more than 70% of Senegalese population has access to electricity and it aims to diversify its electricity mix with renewables as solar. It is supporting the government to add solar to its energy mix through its Scaling Solar Program. Back in 2021, Engie, Meridiam and FONSIS energized 60 MW solar in Senegal under the program
