Goa could become first state to generate green fuel through waste conversion
In an effort to make Goa one of the first states in the country to generate green fuel through waste conversion, the Union ministry of petroleum and natural gas has proposed to set up a green energy fuel chain in the tourist state.
Minister for state for petroleum and natural gas Dharmendra Pradhan said that the Union ministry was open to collaborate with Goa to undertake the project on a pilot basis and see if municipal waste and waste generated by the hospitality sector could be converted into energy by using technology.
Pradhan met chief minister Manohar Parrikar in Delhi and held the initial round of discussions on the issue after making the proposal.
“I requested Manohar Parrikar that Goa government and central government should come together to create a green energy fuel chain in Goa. Goa is a great tourist destination and in the next few decades we can create 100% green fuel,” Pradhan said.
“Bio-waste can be used to create petrol and diesel. The technology is there, we have to research on its scope. Goa will be first state for green fuel conversion,” Pradhan said, while speaking at a function at Goa Shipyard Limited.
“The central government has initiated a slew of measures to reduce India’s dependence on fossil fuels. Based on the Paris COP21 agreement, India is driving the development of cleaner and renewable energy which can reduce the country’s carbon footprint. Some of the developed countries withdrew from the commitment. India is committed to COP21 so we are creating new capacity of renewable energy,” the minister of state explained.
“We can experiment in Goa. Goa has the resources and the raw material. There is waste from the hotels, agriculture and from the marine sector. If, using technology, we can convert this into energy, then through a business model, tax and state legislation, a pilot basis project can be executed in Goa,” Pradhan said.
