Gurgaon: MCG signs MoU for installing LED streetlights

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed by Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) and energy efficiency services limited (EESL) for setting up energy-efficient streetlights in the city at the MCG office in sector 34 on Tuesday. Gurgaon is one of the cities shortlisted for extensive installation of solar rooftops by the Union ministry of new and renewable energy.

The move holds significance as most parts of the city are devoid of proper streetlights.
“The lamps of existing streetlights are mostly metal halide, sodium vapour or fluorescent tubelights. These consume a high amount of electricity and strain the civic coffers. Hence, this project was adopted by MCG, as LED lights are less cost intensive, has better illumination, larger life expectancy and are environment-friendly. The move will also help in the city’s bid to become a smart city,” SS Rohilla, public relations officer of the MCG, said.
According to MCG officials, as part of the agreement, LED streetlights will be installed under the Street Lighting National Programme(SLNP) of the central government, making Gurgaon the first such city in Haryana to adopt the project. The MCG officials further said that roughly 49,000 streetlights will have LED lights, helping conserve more than 13 million units of power each year. The MoU is for a period of 10 years. The MCG will bear costs for setting up the infrastructure and EESL will be responsible for its maintenance.
The issue of power deficit and the need for looking into energy saving devices or alternative modes of energy to overcome the deficit has been the focus of conclaves this year. Experts at the conclave advocated for making it mandatory for residential areas to have provisions for solar rooftops to tap high-intensity solar radiation as well as setting energy performance targets in buildings. The same solutions were also put forward at the annual meet of residents’ welfare associations (RWAs) on Saturday. Gurgaon is one of the cities shortlisted for extensive installation of solar rooftops by the Union ministry of new and renewable energy.
