Hawaii Gas seeks to buy RNG, renewable hydrogen – EQ Mag

Hawaii Gas has issued a request for proposals to purchase renewable natural gas (RNG) and renewable hydrogen in line with its clean energy plan and strategy.

The only regulated gas utility in the state of Hawaii is looking for up to 65,000 therms of RNG, up to 2,300 kg per day of renewable hydrogen, or a blend of both for its utility gas system on Oahu.

Hawaii Gas has been using RNG produced at the Honouliuli Wastewater RNG facility since 2018 and has been blending up to 15% hydrogen into its gas mix since 1974. The company says this puts it into a leading position in terms of blending both RNG and hydrogen into its utility gas supply. “We already have a 50-year head start on mainland gas companies in our use of hydrogen in utility gas distribution,” remarked president and chief executive Alicia Moy.

Resources for RNG production can be wastewater treatment plants, landfills, construction and demolition waste, bio-crops, food waste and dairy farms, while renewable hydrogen can be produced using renewable electricity for electrolysis and steam methane reforming of RNG, the company specified.

“We prefer to make this change using local sources, and hope potential suppliers interpret our request for proposals as a signifier of a growing demand for renewable gas,” Moy said.
