In Short : HDFC Bank’s CSR initiative, Parivartan, aims to bring solar power to 1,000 villages by 2025, empowering rural communities with clean energy. The project has already installed over 61,655 solar streetlights across 22 states. Alongside infrastructure, HDFC Bank launched “Solar Shiksha” to raise awareness about solar energy adoption, addressing knowledge gaps and simplifying access to government schemes.

In Detail : As the world observes Earth Day 2025, HDFC Bank has unveiled a major milestone in its flagship Corporate Social Responsibility ( CSR ) programme, Parivartan. The bank will provide clean and renewable energy access to over 1,000 villages across India by the end of the year, reaffirming its commitment to inclusive and sustainable development.

Under its Natural Resource Management pillar, HDFC Bank Parivartan has already installed over 61,655 solar streetlights across 22 states, significantly enhancing safety and mobility in rural communities. These efforts align with this year’s Earth Day theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” which calls for urgent acceleration of clean energy adoption.

The bank has also introduced ‘Solar Shiksha’, an awareness programme aimed at simplifying solar adoption by addressing misconceptions and providing practical demonstrations, regional-language learning materials, and guidance on accessing government subsidies. To date, more than 90 workshops have been held across states including Maharashtra, Karnataka, Delhi, Telangana and Chhattisgarh, benefiting over 3,000 individuals in 450 plus communities.

Speaking on the initiative, Kaizad Bharucha, Deputy Managing Director, HDFC Bank, said, “Our solar energy efforts are not only about lighting homes but also about creating economic opportunity and resilience. On Earth Day, we reaffirm our commitment to scaling up sustainable solutions for rural and semi-urban India.”

The solar solutions deployed go far beyond lighting. In Maharashtra’s Palghar district, solar-powered piped water systems have brought tap water to homes in remote villages, reducing the burden on women and children. In Andhra Pradesh, solar irrigation systems are boosting year-round farming and reducing seasonal migration.

In Rajasthan’s drought-prone Barmer district, solar-powered pumps have eased drinking water shortages, while in Tamil Nadu’s Krishnagiri, solar fencing has reduced crop damage from wild animals. In Madhya Pradesh, women-led enterprises are running bakeries and grain mills on solar power, and in Telangana, solar irrigation and insect control systems are increasing farm productivity and incomes.

From passive solar greenhouses in Ladakh to solar dryers in tea plantations of the North-East, the Bank’s initiatives span the length and breadth of India, enabling local solutions tailored to regional challenges.

Nusrat Pathan, Head of CSR, HDFC Bank, said, “Democratising solar energy means building awareness, capacity, and infrastructure. Our efforts are designed to ensure community ownership and long-term energy independence.”
