In Detail : Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has reached an impressive 92% localization in its manufacturing processes. This achievement includes the production of more than 1,200 key components locally, which significantly reduces reliance on imports. By prioritizing domestic manufacturing, Hyundai has taken a significant step toward supporting India’s Make in India initiative and boosting the local economy.

In collaboration with Mobis India, Hyundai has started assembling electric vehicle (EV) battery packs locally at its advanced Chennai facility. The Creta Electric will be the first model to utilize these locally assembled battery packs, highlighting the integration of high-quality, domestically produced components in Hyundai’s EV lineup.

Since the localization efforts began in 2019, Hyundai has saved USD 672 million in foreign exchange. By manufacturing critical components within the country, the company has been able to lower production costs, making its vehicles more competitive and accessible to Indian consumers.

The localization drive has also created over 1,400 direct jobs in India. These roles span various aspects of the automotive industry, such as manufacturing, assembly, and quality control, contributing to economic growth and fostering the development of a skilled workforce in the country.

Hyundai’s Chennai-based battery assembly plant has an initial annual capacity of 75,000 battery packs. This facility is equipped to produce a variety of battery types, including NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt) and LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate), catering to the diverse needs of the electric vehicle market.

By localizing production and assembly, Hyundai is playing a vital role in advancing India’s electric vehicle ecosystem. This initiative not only supports cost efficiency and sustainability but also aligns with the country’s ambitious goals for green mobility and renewable energy adoption.
