IIT-H partners with Japanese company to produce electric vehicles
The Indian Institute of Technology-Hyderabad and ItsEV, a Japan-based electric vehicle manufacturing company were planning to launch electric vehicle, which can be recharged by installing solar panels on its top, in Indian market.
Sangareddy: In a revolutionary move in Indian Automobile Sector, which was heading towards adoption of manufacturing of electric vehicles, the Indian Institute of Technology-Hyderabad and ItsEV, a Japan-based electric vehicle manufacturing company were planning to launch electric vehicle, which can be recharged by installing solar panels on its top, in Indian market. A three-wheeler prototype was already test run on the institute premises on Thursday.
Two days ahead of a day-long workshop on “Dawn of New Era for Indian Automobile Industry” at IIT-H, the faculty of Department of Chemistry IIT-H and ITsEV, a Japan-based Lithium-Ion Battery Manufacturing Company, which signed an MoU a few months ago, have conducted a test run of the three-wheeler on the premises of IIT-H Campus on Thursday. They have brought the spare parts of three-wheeler auto from Japan and assembled them at IIT-H. Kazuo Chiba, President of ITsEV Incorporation, and Prof Surendra Martha, faculty at the Department Of Chemistry at IIT-H, conducted a test run on the premises of the campus.
The sources associated with the collaboration told Telangana Today that the three-wheeler electric auto can be operated for 80 KM distance after three hours of recharge at 40-KMPH speed. However, the research is further going on to increase the speed and battery time. Though the IIT-H and ItsEV company were initially planning to launch the vehicle for internal operations of industries, campuses and other short distance places, they were confident of launching a commercial vehicle in a short while.
Sources said that the Japanese company has launched the vehicle for commercial use in Japan already. However, a team member working on the project has said the difference between the temperatures in Japan and India is making them do more research to make the battery useable in Indian temperatures. The vehicle’s market price would be just Rs 1.2 lakh if the spare parts were manufactured in India. The researchers were expected to disclose more information about the vehicle on November 30 during the work-shop at IIT-H Campus.
Research Scholar at the Department of Chemistry, Naresh Vangapally has said that they were excited to be associated with such a revolutionary project.
