Renewed Efforts for Power Grid Link

India and Sri Lanka, in a renewed bid for regional cooperation, are working diligently to realize a long-envisioned dream: India and Sri Lanka Progress, connecting their power grids to facilitate electricity trade. This ambitious project is not only set to fortify bilateral ties but also enhance energy security for both nations. Last month’s proposal discussions have now paved the way for an updated detailed project report, which aims to explore the potential of both overhead and undersea cable connectivity.

According to individuals with inside knowledge, efforts are in full swing with the draft detailed project report anticipated by September 15. Post its completion, this draft will form the basis for comprehensive discussions between the two nations, streamlining the blueprint for implementation.

Collaborative Technical Analysis and Historical Overview

Delving into the specifics, Sri Lanka has taken the initiative to conduct necessary load flow studies for the 2027-28 period, projecting a substantial 500 MW exchange from India via the proposed connection. Concurrently, India will embark on analyzing the merged network data, relying on Sri Lankan input, with a completion target set for August 21.

The insights derived from these studies will be pivotal for the joint technical team’s deliberations. This team, formed back in 2016, is a blend of experts from the Central Electricity Authority, Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd, and the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) India and Sri Lanka Progress.

It’s worth noting that this cross-border interconnection plan isn’t novel. Discussions surrounding it have spanned almost two decades. However, the vision’s realization was thwarted due to considerable project costs which were deemed unviable. Nevertheless, the renewed commitment from both sides underlines the strategic importance of this project, both in terms of energy trade and strengthening bilateral relations.
