India now has 70,000 MW of solar power generation capacity; Rajasthan leading the pack – EQ Mag
India has reached a significant milestone in its solar power generation capacity, surpassing 70,000 Megawatts (MW). Rajasthan is leading the way with the highest installed base of renewable energy technology among all the states, contributing 17,839 MW. Gujarat follows with 10,133 MW, Karnataka with 9,050 MW, Tamil Nadu with 6,892 MW, Maharashtra with 4,870 MW, Telangana with 4,695 MW, and Andhra Pradesh with 4,552 MW.
Among other larger states, Madhya Pradesh has contributed 3,021 MW, and Uttar Pradesh has contributed only 2,526 MW of solar capacity. Punjab’s contribution stands at 1,190 MW, Haryana at 1,106 MW, Chhattisgarh at 962 MW, and Bihar at 203 MW.
India has an estimated solar power potential of 748,990 MW, indicating that the potential of solar energy is still largely untapped. The government is actively working to harness this potential through various schemes and programs. Some of these initiatives include allowing 100% Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the renewable energy sector, waiving Inter State Transmission System (ISTS) charges for inter-state sale of solar and wind power, and setting a trajectory for Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) until 2029-30.
The government is also taking steps to enhance infrastructure, such as laying new transmission lines and creating new sub-station capacity under the Green Energy Corridor Scheme. Additionally, they have established standards for the deployment of solar photovoltaic systems and a Project Development Cell to attract and facilitate investments in renewable energy.
India’s progress in solar power generation is a positive step towards achieving the country’s renewable energy goals and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. With further investment and implementation of sustainable energy practices, India can continue to lead the way in solar power generation.
