In Short : India Power Corporation Ltd, in partnership with ChargET, has launched West Bengal’s first green EV charging station in Kolkata’s Salt Lake Sector V. Capable of charging 60 vehicles at once, it currently uses thermal power but will switch to solar within six months. India Power and ChargET plan to expand with more solar-powered stations across the state.

In Detail : India Power Corporation Ltd, in collaboration with Kolkata-based startup ChargET, has launched West Bengal’s first green electric vehicle (EV) charging station. The facility is located in Salt Lake’s Sector V, a major tech and business hub in Kolkata, signaling a major step forward in the region’s green mobility infrastructure.

The charging station can accommodate around 60 EVs at a time, addressing the growing demand for sustainable transportation solutions in the city. As the adoption of EVs rises, such infrastructure is critical to ensure smooth and convenient charging options for users.

While the station is currently powered by conventional thermal energy, India Power has committed to making it fully solar-powered within the next six months. This move aligns with the company’s broader sustainability goals and reflects a push toward reducing carbon emissions in the energy and transport sectors.

India Power has also announced plans to establish similar green EV charging stations in other cities across West Bengal, including Asansol, Raniganj, Purulia, and Barakarh. These upcoming stations will also be solar-powered, further contributing to the state’s renewable energy transition.

ChargET, the technology partner in the project, is also expanding its network. The startup aims to install 250 new EV charging stations across Kolkata by next year, helping to create a robust and accessible EV charging ecosystem in the city.

The initiative is part of a larger movement in India toward sustainable urban development and reduced dependency on fossil fuels. As infrastructure improves and EV adoption grows, projects like this are expected to play a key role in transforming urban transportation.
