In Short : In 2024, India added 25.3 GW of solar module and 11.6 GW of cell manufacturing capacity, raising totals to 90.9 GW and 40.7 GW, respectively. This growth was fueled by strong demand and the return of the ALMM policy. Around 80% of new module lines support advanced M10 and G12 wafer technologies, boosting India’s renewable energy push.

In Detail : India saw a major boost in its solar manufacturing sector in 2024, with the addition of 25.3 GW of solar module capacity and 11.6 GW of solar cell capacity. This marks a significant step toward the country’s renewable energy goals.

By the end of 2024, India’s cumulative solar module manufacturing capacity reached 90.9 GW, while solar cell manufacturing capacity stood at 40.7 GW. The rise in capacity highlights the rapid expansion of domestic manufacturing capabilities.

A key driver behind this surge was the reimplementation of the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) order in April 2024. The ALMM regulation requires solar developers to use approved equipment, pushing demand for domestic modules and cells.

Strong market demand also played a crucial role in the expansion, with developers preparing for large-scale solar installations. The move aligns with India’s broader strategy to reduce reliance on imported solar equipment.

Notably, around 80% of the current module manufacturing capacity is now capable of producing modules using advanced M10 and G12 wafer sizes. These larger wafer formats improve efficiency and reflect the industry’s shift toward next-generation solar technology.

India’s solar manufacturing progress is a key element in its ambition to become a global hub for renewable energy production. The continued focus on policy support and innovation is expected to further accelerate growth in the sector.
