In Detail : India’s rooftop solar installations reached an all-time high of 3.2 GW in 2024, marking an 86% increase from the previous year. This significant growth was largely fueled by the government’s PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, which provided subsidies and incentives for residential consumers to adopt solar power solutions. The initiative helped accelerate the shift towards renewable energy adoption in urban and rural areas.

Residential consumers accounted for 74% of the total rooftop solar capacity installed in 2024. The policy-driven push encouraged homeowners to embrace solar energy, reducing dependency on conventional power sources. With lower installation costs and improved financing options, more households found solar power to be a viable and cost-effective solution.

Among states, Gujarat led the rooftop solar expansion, contributing 36% of the total installations. Maharashtra followed with a 20% share, while Kerala accounted for 9% of the newly added capacity. These states benefitted from proactive policies, strong net metering regulations, and public awareness campaigns that boosted adoption rates.

By December 2024, India’s cumulative rooftop solar capacity reached 13.7 GW. The rapid expansion reflects growing consumer interest and increased efforts by the government to promote decentralized energy solutions. The success of the rooftop solar segment also aligns with India’s broader renewable energy goals to enhance sustainability and reduce carbon emissions.
