With Tehran apparently preparing to sign up to a revised JCPOA nuclear deal, MEES looks at the issues that could stand in the way of a smooth resumption of the 2018 deal.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on 15 August flagged-up a breakthrough on the potential restoration of the 2018 JCPOA Iran Nuclear deal with the Islamic Republic sending an official response to a draft “final text” of the agreement brokered by European Union (EU) mediators.
The US said it would respond privately but having worked in close coordination with the EU on the draft, is likely to sign off on it. Iran and the US have not sat across the table from each other and instead have relied on mediators to reach a deal but Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian noted that Washington has “verbally” shown “relative flexibility.”
