ISRO will provide calculator to measure solar power potential of any region in the world: PM Modi at COP26 – EQ Mag Pro
Speaking at COP26, PM Narendra Modi announced that India’s space agency ISRO would soon give the world a ‘solar power calculator’ which will use satellite data to measure the solar energy potential of all regions of the world.
This application, he said, will help to decide the location of solar energy projects across the globe. It will, hence, strengthen the One Sun One World One Grid initiative.
PM Modi launched the Green Grids Initiative – One Sun One World One Grid jointly with UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson at the ‘Accelerating Clean Technology, Innovation and Deployment’ leader’s event at COP26 on Tuesday.
WHAT IS THE ONE SUN ONE WORLD ONE GRID INITIATIVE?
The One Sun One World One Grid initiative aims to create a global solar power grid that will supply solar power across the world. The idea was first floated by PM Modi in 2018 during the first assembly of the International Solar Alliance.
Speaking at COP26, PM Modi said, “The energy we get from the sun is totally clean and sustainable. The only challenge is that solar energy is only available during the daytime and also depends on climatic conditions. One Sun, One World, One Grid is the solution to this problem. A worldwide solar power grid can ensure clean energy everywhere, all the time.”
He said he is hopeful that a common and strong global grid can be developed through cooperation between different countries.
WHAT ELSE DID PM MODI SAY ON TUESDAY?
During his address on solar energy, PM Modi said, “If we want to re-establish the balance with nature, solar power is the way. We must once again walk with the sun. The energy all of humankind consumes in an entire year is the same as what the sun gives to the Earth in one hour.”
PM Modi told world leaders that the push for solar power can reduce the need for storage and the carbon footprint. The push for a solar alliance through the development of an international solar power grid will also open new avenues for cooperation between nations, he added.
Earlier in the day, he had launched the Initiative for the Resilient Island States (IRIS) for developing the infrastructure of small island nations. The initiative is a part of the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure.
