A group of 300 students at the Lovely Professional University (LPU) along with the faculty have developed a solar-powered driverless smart bus which was displayed at the 106th edition of the Indian Science Congress (ISC).

The event was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Jalandhar on Thursday (January 3).

Priced at Rs 6 lakh, the bus is completely pollution-free and uses only renewable energy in the form of electric motor and solar power for propulsion.

The bus, which can run at a speed of 30 km per hour, took 12 months to programme. It has a capacity of 10 to 30 people and can travel upto 70 km on a single charge.

The bus uses GPS and Bluetooth for navigation and can be controlled within a radius of 10 m. The technology works by using wireless signals detected through ultra-sonic and infra-red sensors.

This bus is suitable for use at airports and is slated to enter into commercial service later this year.
