Kuwait’s MEW Eyes 16 Energy Projects to Produce Electricity by 2030
Move aims to harvest energy from renewable sources.
KUWAIT : The Ministry of Electricity and Water has included 16 renewable energy projects in its plan, affirming its keenness to introduce renewable energy projects, in accordance with the supreme direction of Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad’s vision to produce alternative energy technology to obtain electricity from its sustainable sources so that it contributes to the production of between 4,500 and 5,000 megawatts of the total energy produced in the State of Kuwait by 2030 (or 15 percent of the total energy produced), and this percentage is expected to be achieved in 2025.
The plan, a copy of which has been obtained by the Al-Seyassah daily, depends on the current photovoltaic projects, for example the Shaqaya project.
The project aims to exploit the Shaqaya area to harvest energy from renewable sources, such as solar and wind energy, and it also helps to provide an important and complementary part and other sources of energy to supply Kuwait with its annual needs of electricity, especially in the summer when the demand for electric power is at its peak.
The report indicated that the ministry’s plan included among the important projects a project of photovoltaic panels on the roofs of 6 story buildings in Subhan with a production capacity of 3.7 megawatts, photovoltaic panels on the canopies of cars and buildings in Al-Zour power station with a combined capacity of 4,000 kilowatts, as well as a project of photovoltaic panels on car sheds and buildings in Al-Subbiya with combined capacity 3000 kW.
The report indicated that among the important projects is the photovoltaic panels project on the ground water tanks at the Subbiya station with a installed capacity of (30,000) kilowatts, the project of supplying, installing and operating the photovoltaic panels on car canopies with a installed capacity of (4,600) kilowatts, the peak in Sabhan, the photovoltaic panels project on the ground water tanks in the Doha complex with an installed capacity of (10,000) kW.
