Kyrgyzstan most vulnerable to climate change: PM – EQ Mag Pro
Bishkek : Kyrgyzstan is one of the most vulnerable countries to the effects of climate change, Kyrgyz Prime Minister Akylbek Japarov said on Thursday.
“As a country that is one of the most vulnerable to climate change, the Kyrgyz Republic recognizes the importance of the global climate change problem and makes every effort to solve it successfully,” Japarov said at a regional summit on sustainable development goals post-Covid.
The country has already proposed several initiatives in order to promote cooperation in the environmental sphere, according to the prime minister. Kyrgyzstan also plans to submit at the 77th session of the UN General Assembly a resolution on the announcement of a five-year action plan for the development of mountain regions, a concept for which was already presented by the Permanent Mission of the Kyrgyz Republic to the UN in May.
Japarov also reaffirmed Kyrgyzstan’s commitment to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 44% by 2030 and reach carbon neutrality by 2050.
The prime minister said that the construction of small and medium hydroelectric power plants in Kyrgyzstan “would contribute to ensuring the water and energy security of the entire Central Asian region.” He also urged investors, international financial institutions, climate funds and corporations to cooperate for mutual benefit in hydroelectric power and other areas of renewable energy sources.
