Larsen & Toubro Selected as Key EPC Contractor for World’s First 24/7 Solar PV and Battery Storage Project in Abu Dhabi – EQ
In Short : Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has been chosen as the EPC contractor for Abu Dhabi’s groundbreaking 24/7 solar PV and battery storage project. Developed by Masdar and EWEC, the project features a 5.2 GW solar plant and a 19 GWh battery system, ensuring continuous clean energy. It aligns with UAE’s Energy Strategy 2050, setting a global benchmark for renewable innovation.
In Detail : Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has been chosen by Masdar as one of the preferred Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractors for the north site of the world’s first 24/7 solar photovoltaic (PV) and battery storage gigascale project, set to be developed in Abu Dhabi. This groundbreaking initiative, led by Masdar, the UAE’s clean energy frontrunner, and in partnership with Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), was announced at Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW). The project aims to provide a reliable 1 gigawatt (GW) of baseload power around the clock, every day of the week.
The project will feature a massive 5.2GW (DC) solar PV plant paired with a 19 gigawatt-hour (GWh) battery energy storage system (BESS), marking it as the largest solar and battery storage installation globally. It will be divided into a north and south site, each contributing 2.6GW and 9.5GWh of PV capacity.
The announcement took place during ADSW in the presence of His Excellency Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Chairman of Masdar. The official Letter of Award was signed by Abdulaziz Alobaidli, Chief Operating Officer of Masdar, and A Ravindran, Senior Vice President & Head – Renewables IC at L&T, with T Madhava Das, Whole-Time Director & Senior Executive Vice President (Utilities) at L&T, also in attendance.
Abdulaziz Alobaidli shared, “This project represents a major leap in the clean energy transition, addressing the challenge of renewable energy intermittency by ensuring continuous clean energy supply. As Masdar’s largest and most ambitious project to date, we’ve carefully chosen partners who will help us set new global standards in clean energy.”
S.N. Subrahmanyan, Chairman & Managing Director of L&T, commented, “The UAE’s vision and actions to drive sustainable economic growth reflect its leadership in global clean energy efforts. L&T is fully committed to contributing advanced solutions for the global energy transition.”
T Madhava Das added, “We are excited to build on our strong partnership with Masdar to execute this prestigious project. With our expertise in renewable energy generation, power transmission and distribution, and digital solutions, we are dedicated to delivering this landmark project that aligns with the future of energy.”
