Marquette to install electric vehicle charging stations

Marquette has contracted with ChargePoint, North America’s largest network of electric vehicle charging stations, to install two dual-port charging stations on the lower level of each of the university’s two on-campus parking structures.

The Level 2 AC charging stations will allow up to four cars to charge at one time in the 16th Street Parking Structure (Structure 1) and another four cars to charge at once in the Wells Street Structure (Structure 2). The indoor locations will give the stations protection from weather and other damage.

The chargers are expected to be installed later this semester.

“EV charging stations are just one more way we can grow our culture of sustainability at Marquette,” says Lora Strigens, vice president for planning and facilities management at Marquette. “It is something we strive for as part of the Sustainability of Valuable Resources goal in our strategic plan, and what we are called to do as a Catholic, Jesuit institution and as responsible stewards of the planet and our community.”

According to Chelsea Malacara, sustainability and energy management coordinator, Marquette began seeking EV charging station vendors last year.

“With more and more drivers seeking sustainable alternatives and electric vehicle prices becoming more affordable, the EV market has expanded greatly,” she says. “We’ve heard increased interest on campus to offer our own charging stations, and we are pleased to be able to add this option for our students, faculty, staff and visitors as we continue to support low-carbon forms of transportation.”

Standard EV charging payments will apply and be managed through the ChargePoint mobile app. The app will also send drivers reminders to move their vehicles after charging so they do not incur ChargePoint’s idling fee.

EV drivers who do not have permits to park in either of the structures will need to pay the $10 daily parking fee to access the charging stations. EV drivers who wish to obtain a parking permit for either of the structures should contact Parking Services.

The Office of Facilities Planning and Management will monitor EV charging station usage to inform decisions around adding more on-campus EV charging stations.
