MCD signs MoU with SECI to install solar plants over suitable buildings in Delhi

The projects covering parking lots, charging stations, etc, will be completed under RESCO mode
Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) and NTPC to install 10-15 MW of solar rooftop capacity on all suitable MCD buildings. The projects will be completed in RESCO mode.
An official states that MCD has already installed 10.3 MW of rooftop solar capacity over 373 buildings in the south corporation area in capex mode. Moreover, 0.33 MW capacity was installed in the east corporation area under RESCO mode, and 1.17 MW capacity was installed on 165 buildings in the north area.
Under the CAPEX models, MCD bears the cost of installing solar panels on roofs and earns revenue by selling the excess power to the grid. In the RESCO model, a third-party bidder who provides the best rates will be selected for the installation and maintenance.
Apart from the above projects, solar plants with capacities of 25 kWp and 110 kWp, have been installed at the Waste of Wonder Park at Sarai Kale Khan and Bharat Darshan Park at Punjabi Bagh respectively. Moreover, a 130kWp solar plant at Shaheedi Park will also be installed shortly.
Additionally, solar panels will also be deployed at upcoming stack and puzzle parking lots, electric charging stations, and local parks.
Delhi has introduced a bold solar policy that aims to achieve a solar capacity of 6 GW by 2025. Despite sluggish progress over that front, such initiatives are expected to significantly contribute towards meeting the set targets.
