Shillong: The first electric vehicle charging station in Meghalaya will be set up at PGCIL’s office premises at Laplang in Shillong, its foundation stone was laid on Friday. Which will be the first such station in the state.

The foundation stone of the Electric Vehicle Charging Station was laid by the state-owned Power Grid Corporation of India Limited. The project work has already been started by PGCIL.

The EVCS is being developed under the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid) and Electric Vehicles (FAME) India Scheme, Phase-II. PGCIL will develop 11 EVCS at Shillong under the scheme.

Out of the 11 EVCS, five will be public, while the rest will be at stations government establishments. So far Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed for four sites. These include the PGCIL office complex at Laplang, the MTC parking lot at Police Bazar, the MTC Ware House at Demthring and the Polo parking lot at Polo.

According to a statement by the Ministry of Power, PGCIL has made a name for itself as one of the market leaders in the EVCS business. It has a good presence in other major cities including Delhi, Bengaluru, Gurugram, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad and Kochi. Presently, the power utility company has more than 1.7 lakh ckm transmission lines, more than 260 sub stations and more than 4.4 lakh MVA conversion capacity.

The company, with the adoption of latest technological equipment and techniques, has been able to maintain average transmission system availability of over 99 per cent, the statement said.
