1000MWh is enough to power approximately 100 homes for one year, or power the average electric passenger car (15KWh per 100km) for 6,670,000km

Al Naboodah Electrics, the solar and renewable technologies contractor of the Al Naboodah Group – which is one of the UAE’s oldest and most respected Emirati family conglomerates – has witnessed the first of its solar PV customers, Mezzan UAE, crossing the 1,000MWh milestone in the generation of clean energy.

The milestone was reached by Mezzan UAE – a major UAE importer and distribution company – at its Unitra International distribution centre in Umm Ramool in a little more than one year. 1000MWh is enough energy to power around 100 homes for one year, or power the average electric passenger car (15KWh per 100km) for 6,670,000km.

Mezzan UAE contracted Al Naboodah Electrics to install a 580kWp rooftop solar PV array in January 2019. Since coming online in January 2020, the solar PV array has over-delivered on its projected energy-generating capabilities, resulting in significant energy cost savings for the client.

The installation at Mezzan UAE’s Unitra International facility was given the green light following a comprehensive consulting process, including an energy-efficiency and strategy analysis, preliminary solar array layouts for enhanced visualisation with 3D renderings, and cash-flow analysis to demonstrate the system’s return on investment over the life of the array.

Commenting on the milestone, the Head of Solar at Al Naboodah Electrics, Ashok Thangavel, said: “It is immensely satisfying to already see the first of our customers in 2021 reach the significant milestone of 1000MWh generated by our solar PV installation.

“The amount of energy generated shows how renewables can deliver significant energy savings and reduced carbon emissions for businesses in the UAE, and contribute towards the nation’s clean energy ambitions.”

Thangavel added: “As a Middle Eastern country close to the equator, one of the UAE’s most abundant natural resources is sunlight, and solar PV installations by Al Naboodah Electrics enable our clients to tap into this limitless source of energy.

“Mezzan UAE certainly won’t be the only company to reach 1,000MWh this year. We have a number of clients projected to reach this milestone in 2021, all of whom came online in 2020, which clearly demonstrates the vast potential for solar energy generation in the UAE.”

A sustainable builder and DEWA-approved renewable energy contractor under the SHAMS Dubai initiative, Al Naboodah Electrics helps its customers achieve energy savings and reduce carbon emissions, supporting the UAE’s vision of achieving 50% clean energy by 2050.
