Mumbai: BMC Chembur ward to soon have solar panels – EQ Mag
MUMBAI: The BMC’s M west ward which consists of areas of Chembur has commissioned a solar power project on the terrace of its ward office.
The 50KW solar project will produce 5,000 units of electricity every month. This would cut down electricity cost by Rs 42,500. Currently the ward office has to bear a cost of Rs 3 lakh as electricity charges each month. While Rs 34.6 lakh were spent on executing the project, officials are hoping that the same would be recovered in the next six years.
Assistant municipal commissioner Vishwas Mote said when he saw the vacant space available on the terrace of the ward office building, it was decided to install solar panels. “We began the tendering process for installing the panels in January. In April, we began the installation process. We undertook a trial last week to confirm if the panels were functioning accurately,” said Mote.
The terrace area of M West ward office is approximately 18,000 square feet and 93 solar energy panels (rooftop solar system) have been installed in about 2,100 square feet of area.
