New Jersey launches up to 4-GW offshore wind tender – EQ Mag
The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU) on Monday fired the starting gun on the state’s third offshore wind solicitation, seeking to award between 1.2 GW and 4 GW of capacity.
Bids will be accepted by June 23, 2023, with the utilities regulator due to select the winning proposals by the end of the year.
The procurement round is part of a wider programme that aims to back New Jersey’s new goal of 11 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2040, set in September last year. The state has so far awarded 3.7 GW of offshore wind capacity in its first two solicitations and plans to hold several more rounds through 2030.
“Offshore wind constitutes a crucial component of our journey to 100% clean energy by 2035 [..],” said Governor Phil Murphy.
In 2019, Ørsted A/S’ (CPH:ORSTED) 1.1-GW Ocean Wind project was selected and in 2021, as much as 2.6 GW of capacity was awarded to Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind, which is equally owned by EDF Renewables North America and Shell New Energies US, and to Ørsted’s Ocean Wind II project.
When the 11 GW offshore turbines become operational, they will degenerate power for 3.2 million homes, NJBPU estimates.
