In Short : NTPC is launching a Green Hydrogen initiative at its Simhadri plant in Andhra Pradesh. The project aims to produce green hydrogen using renewable energy sources like solar and wind, marking a significant step towards decarbonizing India’s energy sector. This initiative will help reduce reliance on fossil fuels, contribute to cleaner energy production, and support India’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions.

In Detail : NTPC’s Research and Development centre, NETRA, is establishing a ground-breaking one-ton per day (tpd) seawater-to-green-hydrogen plant at the NTPC Simhadri station near Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The NTPC initiative aligns with the company’s commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions.

Low-Carbon Desalination for Hydrogen Production

To efficiently process seawater, NTPC initiative has implemented an innovative low-carbon desalination plant that utilizes waste heat from the thermal power plant’s flue gas.

This technology enables the cost-effective conversion of seawater into hydrogen-grade water, a crucial step in hydrogen production.

Water Efficiency in Hydrogen Production

Producing one kilogram of hydrogen typically requires 12-13 kilogram of purified water.

However, considering the growing water scarcity in India, the government is prioritizing the development of technologies that allow hydrogen production from alternative low-grade water sources, such as seawater and wastewater.

This strategy aims to reduce the strain on freshwater resources while supporting clean energy goals.

Support for National Green Hydrogen Mission

NTPC Green Energy Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of NTPC, leads efforts to advance various pathways. These efforts aim to meet the ambitious targets set by the National Green Hydrogen Mission.

As reported by pv-magazine-india.com, NTPC Initiative is helping drive India’s transition to a more sustainable future. It focuses on hydrogen power for a cleaner tomorrow.
