In Short : A 200 KW power plant has been installed in Medziphema, comprising two 100 KW units. This new installation aims to enhance local energy supply and support sustainable power generation for the region.

In Detail : MEDZIPHEMA VILLAGE : In an effort to meet the increasing power demand in rural Nagaland, the department of New and Renewable Energy (NRE), Nagaland, inaugurated another biomass gasifier power plant at Medziphema village on Monday.

The Medziphema plant (2 X 100 KW) is the fifth biomass gasifier power plant in rural Nagaland under the aegis of NRE department, a nascent department created three years back.

Dedicating the new power plant to Medziphema villagers, Advisor for NRE, Deo Nukhu, MLA, in his address said that though NRE is a relatively new department, but the department had undertaken many initiatives to make tangible achievements in new and renewable energy.

Besides biomass gasifier power plants, Nukhu also informed that the department was taking up solar energy and mini-hydro projects covering all 11 districts in the state.

Nagaland being a power-starved state where demand far outweighs supply, the NRE advisor said the NRE department was trying its best to identify alternative power supply through innovative projects.

Thanking the Ministry or NRE for extending all possible assistance to Nagaland state, Nukhu called upon the villagers to make best of the plant and to make it a success story.

Director, NRE, Er. TS Angami in his introductory note said that the 61.40 lakhs project was initiated in 2005-06 with the Centre bearing 90% of the cost but works were delayed as the state could not give its 10% share in time.

The Director also informed that the project was initially earmarked for Pherima village in 2001-02 but due to land acquisition problem, it was shifted to Medziphema.

Chairman, Medziphema village, Khonyu Kuotsu also spoke on the occasion. Joint Director, NRE, Er. Kavito Chishi, chaired the inaugural function. Among other dignitaries, local legislator of the area, Rokonicha, also attended the inaugural function.

Meanwhile, Assistant Director (NRE) and incharge of the Medziphema project, Er. Inaho P Awomi, informed that the Medziphema project constructed by Grain Processing Industries (India) Private Ltd., and the one at Asukhomi village in Zunheboto district both have 2 X 100 KW capacity while the other three biomass gasifier power plants are relatively smaller.

Awomi said the plant is equipped with modified diesel generating set that runs on dual fuel arrangement of 70-80% “producer gas” and 20-30% diesel oil to generate electrical power.

Biomass fuel such as rice husk, wood refuse, saw dust, wood bark or any other agro wastes are fed mechanically into a gas generator, which is embedded on a water-lute in air-tight condition. Firing takes place in the gas generator through supply of controlled air to occur partial combustion for generation of the combustible “producer gas.”
