Queensland’s PowerLink starts work on connection for Genex’s Kidston green energy hub – EQ Mag
Queensland’s transmission network owner PowerLink this week said it has started construction on the project to connect Genex Power’s (ASX:GNX) Kidston Clean Energy Hub to its network.
The AUD-295-million (USD 199m/EUR 191m) project includes the deployment of a new 186-kilometre (115.6 mile) transmission line and two new switching stations at Mount Fox and Kidston. It is scheduled to be commissioned in April 2024, ahead of the expected start-up of the 250-MW/2,000-MWh Kidston pumped storage hydro project in the second half of 2024.
According to the announcement, the connection project is Powerlink’s biggest package of transmission construction works in eight years.
“Off the back of the release of the Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan, this project is set to support around 400 jobs and signals a further step towards Queensland achieving its new renewable energy target of 70 per cent by 2032,” said Powerlink chief executive Paul Simshauser.
On Thursday, Genex Power announced the selection of Goldwind as the preferred turbine supplier for the 258-MW Kidston Stage 3 wind project. The company’s chief executive, James Harding, said that the wind project “will connect into the new transmission line being constructed by Powerlink for the Kidston Pumped Storage Hydro Project which is expected to be energised in 2H CY24, ahead of the completion of the Kidston Stage 3 Wind Project.”
