In Short : Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced that Indian Railways will achieve 100% electrification by FY26, advancing its goal of net-zero emissions by 2030. This move will enhance energy efficiency, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and lower carbon emissions, making rail transport more sustainable and cost-effective across the country.

In Detail : Railways will achieve full electrification by FY26 and are making rapid progress in adopting renewable energy, Union Minister of Railways Mr. Ashwini Vaishnaw stated on Monday. Speaking virtually at the Madhya Pradesh Global Investors Summit (GIS) 2025 after signing a power purchase agreement with the state, he reaffirmed the government’s target of making Railways net zero by 2030.

Over 97% of electrification has already been completed; by FY26, it will reach 100%. Regarding renewable energy, he noted that the capacity of the railways has been secured by 1,500 MW (1.5 GW), with the latest 170 MW power purchase agreement signed with Madhya Pradesh. The agreement is between Railways, Waree Energies, and Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Ltd (RUMSL).

He assured Railways is prepared to procure all stable renewable energy supplies from Madhya Pradesh. He expressed interest in wind and nuclear power if the state develops such projects.

He also indicated a willingness to sign similar agreements with other states. Madhya Pradesh has received a record railway budget of Rs. 14,745 crore (US$ 1.70 billion) for FY26. Before 2014, the construction of railway lines in the state was only 29.3 km per year, but it has now risen to 223 km annually. He highlighted that the speed of railway work has increased 7.5 times, and funding has grown 23 times. He also provided updates on newly sanctioned and ongoing railway projects, stating that a total investment of Rs. 1,04,000 crore (US$ 12 billion) is currently underway for various railway initiatives in the state.
