Rooftop solar panels boom in capital as more consumers opt for clean energy – EQ Mag
BHOPAL: City residents are slowly, but surely, shifting to clean energy. It is clearly evident from the rising number of solar panels being installed on roofs of residential units in Bhopal in recent months. While only 2,970 solar panels were installed on rooftops in the city till November 1, 2022, as many as 2,122 consumers have come up on roofs in the last six months under the net-metering policy, almost double the growth in terms of new consumers.
Overall, the total installed capacity stands at 5,092. Now, more than 5,000 consumers are using solar power panels, of which 1,949 are consumers from west division of the city. Of these 1,949 consumers, 503 rooftop solar panels have been installed at Vidhya Nagar distribution center alone.
Prateek Kumar Sahu, manager of central discom at Vidhya Nagar, said that rooftop solar installations are increasing in the area with more people now coming forward to opt for green energy. “The demand for solar connections is coming from all types of consumers, but educated retired people are taking more interest in it. The areas in our distribution centre where it has gained maximum reception are Bawadiyan Kalan, Misrod,” Sahu said.
Sources said that these connections are done under net-metering policy, which was approved by state cabinet in September 2016. It paved the way for installation of solar rooftop. Under the net-metering policy, non-conventional energy generated by individuals is first used in building as per requirement and surplus power is fed to the grid.
