South Africa’s Department of Mineral Resource and Energy (DMRE) is seeking to award five battery energy storage projects totalling 513 MW in a tender to be open until the start of July.

DMRE last week launched a request for proposals (RFP) that invites bids under the Battery Energy Storage Capacity Bid Window of the country’s Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (Battery Energy Storage IPPPP). Applications will be accepted by July 5, 2023.

The battery storage capacity will be connected to five substations run by national power grid operator Eskom in Northern Cape Province. They will provide capacity, energy and ancillary services to the utility. The names of the substations and the available capacity for the energy storage facilities are given in the table.

Substation Maximum Capacity (MW)
Aggeneis 77
Ferrum 103
Garona 153
Mookodi 77
Nieuwehoop 103

South Africa has set a goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2050. Last summer, Eskom selected South Korea’s Hyosung Heavy Industries Corp and China’s Pinggao Group to deploy a 343-MW multi-site distributed battery project. In October 2022, it signed lease agreements with four independent power producers for the construction of 2 GW of clean power facilities, including wind, solar and battery storage, to connect near existing power stations.
