S Africa opens REIPPPP Bid Window 7 targeting 5 GW of renewables – EQ
The South African government on Thursday launched the request for qualification and proposals (RfP) under Bid Window 7 (BW7) of the country’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (REIPPPP).
The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) formally invited interested parties to register prospective bids for 5,000 MW of renewable energy capacity, including 3,200 MW of onshore wind and 1,800 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) power.
“Given the energy challenges the country is facing, the qualification criteria has been developed to promote the participation of projects that are fully developed, and will be able to be constructed and connected to the national grid as soon as possible, but not later than 24 months post Commercial Close,” DMRE’s invitation reads.
The ministry also notes that the last day to submit applications to obtain a Cost Estimate Letter from local power utility Eskom is January 31, 2024. Bid submission is scheduled for April 30, 2024. The winners are expected to be announced about three months post the Bid Submission Date.
