In Short : Sapher has partnered with the Punjab government to invest in solar energy, supporting the state’s plan to establish 66 solar power plants totaling 264 MW. The initiative, expected to be completed by December 2025, will generate 400 million units of electricity annually, reduce carbon emissions, and attract ₹1,056 crore in investments, boosting Punjab’s renewable energy future.

In Detail : Sapher, a leading player in the renewable energy sector, has announced a strategic investment in Punjab’s solar energy industry, marking a major step towards sustainable development in the region. The initiative is being undertaken in collaboration with the Punjab government through Punjab Genco Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of the Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA). Joseph Villalobos, Founder of Sapher, recently met with Navjot Singh Mandair, Chairman of Punjab Genco Ltd., to discuss innovative renewable energy initiatives aimed at harnessing solar power and other sustainable resources across the state.

The discussions focused on key projects, including the development of solar farms in high-potential locations such as Fazilka and Ferozepur, identified as ideal sites for maximizing solar energy production. Additionally, Sapher explored PEDA’s existing projects in biogas and canal-based hydroelectric power, reinforcing a comprehensive approach to Punjab’s renewable energy transition.

A major highlight of the meeting was addressing challenges associated with canal-based hydropower, particularly balancing water conservation with sustainable energy generation. Sapher introduced an innovative solution installing solar panel farms above canals. This dual-purpose approach not only reduces water evaporation but also maximizes land utilization, offering a sustainable model that benefits both energy generation and agriculture.

Land allocation strategies for solar farms were also discussed, alongside a detailed evaluation of Punjab’s three existing solar energy frameworks: government-contracted projects, private solar farms supplying energy to the state, and a hybrid model integrating direct grid supply with battery storage. Both parties acknowledged the growing preference for hybrid models, which enhance reliability and efficiency in energy distribution.

The partnership also aims to tackle energy challenges faced by rural communities in Punjab, such as frequent power outages and inadequate infrastructure. Sapher and PEDA are committed to delivering scalable renewable solutions that ensure consistent and accessible energy supply for small villages. Expressing his enthusiasm for the collaboration, Mr. Joseph Villalobos stated, “By integrating solar innovations with practical solutions like canal-top installations and hybrid energy models, our goal is to create a sustainable energy ecosystem that supports both the environment and the people of Punjab.”

This investment underscores Sapher’s commitment to advancing clean energy solutions and supporting Punjab in achieving its ambitious renewable energy targets. Further details on project timelines and implementation will be announced in the coming months.
