SCCL mulling 500 MW floating solar power units on reservoirs

Hyderabad: The State-owned Sinagerni Collieries Company Ltd (SCCL) is mulling to take up establishment of 500 MW of floating solar units on reservoirs of major irrigation projects of the State under its ongoing expansion plans. The State government, through TSREDCO (Telangana State Renewable Energy Development Corporation Ltd) has been encouraging power companies to take up floating power generation units to stop evaporation from reservoirs and also to supply power to the massive lift irrigation schemes.
SCCL Chairman and Managing Director N Sridhar on Monday said the company was studying the proposal of TSREDCO to set up floating solar units on major reservoirs of the State. The TSREDCO gave a power point presentation to the SCCL CMD on the proposal. The coal major has discussed the feasibility of setting up a single large unit or five smaller units of 100 MW each. The officials also discussed the location of reservoirs at Karimnagar and Warangal.
The SCCL, which has already launched solar power production in 11 different places, urged the TSREDCO to propose plans for hassle-free solar power generation from floating units. “We will be able to start setting up the floating units only after taking permission from the State government and also after obtaining the Power Purchase Agreement,” Sridhar said.
SCCL Director S Shankar and TSREDCO Vice Chairman N Janaiah and project director Rama Krishna were also president.
