School gets solar plant
Cooch Behar: A solar plant that can generate 10 kilowatts of power was commissioned at the Sadar Government High School here on Wednesday.
This is the first time that such a facility has been installed at an educational institution in the district. The plant will cut down power bills of the school by half, authorities said.
“We had applied for the project two years back and it was approved about a year ago. Since then, work had been going on at the plant and today (Wednesday), it was successfully commissioned,” said Moloy Kanti Roy, the headmaster of the school.
He said the project had been implemented by an NGO and funds had been provided by the state government and the Union ministry of new and renewable energy.
“Usually, around 15 KW of power is consumed at the school every day for which we need to pay around Rs 50,000 in every two months. From today onwards, our power bill will come down by 50 per cent or even more as we will get around seven to eight kilowatts of power from the solar plant. Also, as it is connected to the power transmission grid, the state power supply company can draw power from the plant on holidays,” said the headmaster.
The school, located at Temple Street in Cooch Behar town, has 960 students and 23 teachers. It is a boys’ school having classes from primary to higher secondary.
The three-storied building has 35 rooms which include classrooms, laboratories, computer rooms and others.
“Power supply is required in most of these rooms throughout the school hours. Now that we have solar plant, we will require only half of the power from the state electricity company every day. It is indeed a major infrastructure that was commissioned at the school today (Wednesday). We are also the first educational institution in the district to have such an alternative and renewable power facility,” Bijan Saha, a maths teacher of the school, said.
Students of the school also appeared enthusiastic.
“We have read and heard about solar energy and electricity generated from it. It gives a nice feeling to know that the power we will use at the school from now on will be solar power,” said a student.
They can also have an idea of the power plant and how electricity is generated, transferred to grid and the school’s power distribution network, said another student.
