Siemens Government Technologies to Install Renewable Energy Solution for North Carolina Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians
Siemens has received a $2.36 million contract from the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) to install, operate, and maintain a solar photovoltaic (PV) power farm consisting of a 2,000 PV panel array on EBCI’s reservation near Murphy, N.C.
Once operational, the Siemens-designed project will supply renewable power to four buildings totaling more than 155,000 square feet, affording EBCI greater energy independence and a carbon neutral approach to meeting their reliable power needs. Projected to be operational by March, 2019, EBCI will realize more than $100,000 per year in energy savings thanks to power harnessed from the sun. In addition to leading project design and implementation, Siemens will work with EBCI to provide competency training to their civil engineering team for installation, maintenance, and operation of the solar PV array.
“Our Tribe is taking a tremendous first step in renewable energy production with the solar PV array at Harrah’s River Valley Casino and Hotel. We know that we are making a smart investment, with the help of a Department of Energy grant, that will reduce operational costs, thereby enhancing the casino’s profitability,” said Joey Owle, Secretary of Agriculture and Natural Resources for EBCI. “This project demonstrates our Tribe’s commitment to lessening our carbon footprint and investing in the future, now. We appreciate our partnership with Siemens in making this project a reality.”
The opportunity to assist EBCI with their sustainable energy goals builds on work Siemens has performed for Native American tribes, helping them take important steps toward achieving energy sovereignty.
“As an experienced federal energy savings contractor with a proven track record of delivering highly successful solar PV projects, we are proud to partner with EBCI in helping them meet their energy efficiency and sustainability goals,” said Barbara Humpton, president and CEO of Siemens Government Technologies, Inc. “We look forward to being a trusted partner for EBCI – and all Native American tribes – for many years to come.”
