Siemens introduces dual microgrid controllers for decentralized energy installations of any size
- Expanded portfolio includes a larger-scale Microgrid Management System (MGMS) and flexible Microgrid Controller Software (MGC) to help any size installation efficiently manage decentralized energy resources
Siemens Digital Grid has introduced an expanded portfolio of microgrid controllers to help customers of any size embrace the growing decentralized energy market. The larger-scale Microgrid Management System (MGMS), designed to handle complex applications, is now complemented by a flexible Microgrid Controller (MGC) that manages smaller-scale decentralized energy installations.
As the cost of energy technologies like solar power and battery storage continue to become more competitive, the decentralized energy market continues to grow. Much of this growth can be attributed to implementations of smaller-scale microgrids that can be managed via controller versus a more robust management solution. Siemens has structured its microgrid management portfolio to reflect these market needs and now offers software for both the large and small-scale management of decentralized technologies.
“A few years ago, the only microgrid systems coming online were relatively large. But as decentralized energy technologies continue to become more mainstream, we see customers ranging from an industrial plant to a university looking to install their own microgrids,” said Mike Carlson, president of Siemens Digital Grid, North America. “Our goal with this portfolio is to offer the industry’s most advanced microgrid control software that allows everyone, from a large city to a single hospital, to manage and reap the benefits of decentralized energy systems.”
Siemens suite of microgrid controllers help customers dynamically tailor their generation sources to their power loads, providing a variety of capabilities and functionalities in order to increase reliability and minimize cost. For example, operators can plan power generation based on energy market price forecasts on a 15-minute, hourly, or up to day-ahead increments. This allows customers to achieve full economic value from the microgrid while maintaining their traditional base load needs and minimizing carbon footprint with the use of renewable or other clean fuels. For less demanding applications, other microgrid functionality with economic benefits could include islanding, detection and integration of renewable assets.
Siemens has worked with customers across the U.S. to implement microgrid technology, including Blue Lake Rancheria, a Native American reservation in Northern California that relies on Siemens MGMS to operate a low-carbon community microgrid. The microgrid powers critical infrastructure and is estimated to save $200,000 per year, reduce 150 tons CO2 emissions annually and create clean energy jobs on the reservation.
