Solar Energy In 29 Rajasthan Govt Colleges Has Brought Down Power Bills From Rs 2 Lakh To Zero
Solar energy is a useful source of energy and at this time when the world is facing a major climate crisis, this seems to be the need of the hour. We are well aware of the fact how solar energy brings about our electricity bills and one such example from Rajasthan is proof to this. Rajasthan’s 29 government colleges have reduced to monthly electricity bills to zero all thanks to solar energy, a report in the Times of India stated.
These solar panels were set up in 2017-18 in order to cut power expenses. The electricity bills of these colleges run into lakhs of rupees consuming away the limited financial resources they get through fees and grants.
Putting the numbers into perspective, an average power bill in colleges with a capacity of 2,000 students can go up to Rs 1.5-2.5 lakh per month during summers and around Rs 1-2 lakh in winters.
“At least I can say that 29 of our colleges can save Rs 20 lakh a year on power consumption. the saving can be utilised for the development of these colleges, In this manner we are also fulfilling the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in reducing the carbon footprint”, said Pradeep Borad, college commissioner of Rajasthan, quoted to as saying by TOI.
This is not the first time that schools electricity bills have been brought down by installing solar panels.
In June last year, a pilot project by Delhi government to install solar panels on terraces of schools proved successful. One such school’s electricity bill came down from Rs.35,000 to zero.
“Successful pilot of terrace solar panels in #DelhiGovtSchools. Electricity bill of this school reduces from Rs.35,000 to Zero. Already installed in 21, being installed in 100, plan is to install in a total of 500 schools. Important step towards power independence for Delhi!,” the official twitter handle of Delhi Education Minister Manish Sisodia said.
