Algeria’s minister of industry Ahmed Zeghdar and the minister of renewable energy Benattou Ziane have inaugurated a solar panel factory in the province of Ouargla with an annual capacity of 180 MW.

The factory is owned by Zergoun Green Energy.

This project, the first of its kind in Algeria, is of great importance to the North African country in the context of the Solar 1,000 initiative which envisages the deployment of 1 GW of photovoltaic capacity across the country, the Ministry of Industry said on Tuesday.

The sites selected for the solar plants that will be built as part of the scheme are located in five provinces and Ouargla is one of them.

The solar power plant that will be set up in Ouargla will have a capacity of 100 MW and will be located on an area of 200 hectares (494.2 acres).

During his visit to the factory, Zeghdar noted that the transition to green energy is inevitable and investments in this area must be increased.
