Solar powered jammers to keep tab on phone calls from jails in Uttar Pradesh
Close to 300 mobile phone jammers powered by solar energy are going to be installed in 24 district and central jails of Uttar Pradesh before the end of March 2017. The move which is said to completely raze the illegal phone communication between prisoners and their aides to execute crime such as contract murders, robbery and loot, will have maximum number of jammers in Bareilly central jail, Naini, Lucknow, Meerut, Gorakhpur, Agra and others. There are close to 88,747 prisoners in 57 district and five central jails apart from other jails in Uttar Pradesh.
Speaking to TOI, additional director general of police for prison, G L Meena said, “Due to shortage of power supply in the state, seldom prisoners took advantage of loopholes and easily make contact with their counterparts over phones hidden in jails to execute a crime, but now effective solar powered jammers will stop this nuisance.” He said, “State government has sanctioned Rs 3.51 crore for the installation of solar plants, jammers, CCTV cameras, video conference systems, door frame detectors and other security strengthening instruments.”
In the first phase, jails of Muzaffarnagar, Agra, Varanasi, Mirzapur, Sultanpur, Meerut and Noida are going to be fitted with solar powered jammers; later Bareilly, Gorakhpur, Naini, Pratapgarh, Lucknow, Aligarh and Bulandshahr will have the jammers. According to UP police, Bareilly will have maximum 41 jammers, Naini 28, Lucknow 24, Meerut 15, Aligarh 12, Etah seven and Agra six.
