The Spanish ministry for the ecological transition said on Friday it had awarded around EUR 200 million (USD 218m) in state grants to domestic green hydrogen production and hydrogen value chain projects following a competitive procedure.
The funds, drawn from the Covid recovery instrument, will support 37 projects selected through two competitive programmes — the pioneering H2 and the value chain programme. Some preliminary results were first announced in early December last year. On Friday, the ministry released lists with projects that secured definitive approval following a period of objections.
The pioneering H2 programme was aimed at projects that pair green hydrogen production and distribution with a secured off-take scheme. Off-takers could be industrial facilities or entities within a hub that need hydrogen for heavy-duty mobility or as a replacement for natural gas, the ministry explained.
Within this programme, 19 approved projects will split EUR 150 million.
The hydrogen value chain programme was organised as four competitions, each with its own theme. The H2 value chain 1 sub-programme was dedicated to advancing domestic capacity to manufacture components for hydrogen production or storage or establish testing platforms for hydrogen technologies. Here, six initiatives were selected to receive aid totalling EUR 11.9 million.
The sub-programme 2 was dedicated to hydrogen mobility equipment. In this category, grants totalling EUR 37.52 million will be distributed between 12 projects.
Definitive awards for the sub-programmes 3 and 4 will be known in the coming weeks, the ministry said, adding that Spain’s national hydrogen goal is to reach 300 MW to 600 MW of electrolysis capacity in 2024 and 4,000 MW in 2030.
