STATEMENT: UN Releases Report of High-Level Expert Group on Net-Zero Commitments – EQ Mag Pro

SHARM EL SHEIKH : Today the UN High-Level Expert Group will release a major report with recommendations on how to bring clarity and rigor to net-zero pledges from non-state actors, such as corporations, investors, and cities. The launch event will take place at COP27 in the Ibis room with Catherine McKenna and others.

Following a statement from Ani Dasgupta, President and CEO, World Resources Institute:

“Companies must be held to a high bar to ensure their actions help tackle the climate crisis at the pace and scale necessary. The High-Level Expert Group’s report offers valuable insights on how businesses, investors, cities and others can set stronger and clearer net-zero emissions pledges and speed up implementation. The report lays out five clear principles that anyone advocating for bold corporate climate action should closely consider.

“Nearly 1,500 companies are now committed to reach net-zero emissions according to the Science Based Targets initiative. This surge of interest from the corporate sector to zero out emissions is truly inspiring, but it is critical that companies’ plans are credible and backed up with bold, immediate action and transparent reporting on progress. Any corporate net-zero targets with loopholes or weak guardrails would put our planet and billions of people in peril.”
