In Short : STMicroelectronics has partnered with ENGIE to establish a sustainable power supply for its operations in Malaysia. Under this collaboration, ENGIE will provide renewable energy solutions to STMicroelectronics’ manufacturing facilities, supporting the company’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint. The partnership aims to increase the use of clean energy, aligning with global sustainability goals and promoting greener industrial practices in the region.

In Detail : STMicroelectronics has signed a 21-year agreement with BKH Solar, a joint venture between ENGIE Renewable SEA and Conextone Energy, to secure renewable energy from a new solar farm in Bukit Kayu Hitam, Kedah, Malaysia. Starting in 2025, this deal will supply around 50 GWh of renewable electricity each year to support ST’s test and assembly site in Muar, Johor.

Part of Malaysia’s Corporate Green Power Program, this is ST’s first renewable energy agreement in Asia and aligns with its aim to be carbon neutral and use 100 per cent renewable energy by 2027. ST’s EVP Geoff West highlighted the importance of this agreement in achieving ST’s sustainability goals, calling it a key move toward carbon-neutral operations.

ENGIE’s Southeast Asia Managing Director, Amit Jain, expressed pride in supporting ST’s renewable goals, stressing ENGIE’s dedication to clean energy. The Muar site, with over 4,700 employees and focused on automotive applications, will benefit from this transition, which also highlights ST’s commitment to a sustainable, carbon-neutral future.

Earlier in April 2024, STMicroelectronics entered into a ten-year power purchase agreement with Centrica Energy for renewable energy to supply its Italian operations. This agreement was reached to support ST’s major semiconductor manufacturing sites in Agrate (near Milan) and Catania, as well as additional R&D, design, and sales locations across the country.
