The Chandigarh administration, as part of the 2022 Electric Vehicle Policy, decided it will not register non-electric two-wheelers between February 10 and March 31 this year.

The Supreme Court on Friday refused to entertain a petition filed by Federation of Automobile ADalers Association against the the Chandigarh administration’s electric vehicle (EV) policy 2022 [Federation of Automobile Dealers Association vs Chandigarh Administration].

A bench comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, Justices PS Narasimha and JB Pardiwala noted that the matter is already pending before the Punjab and Haryana High Court and therefore, asked the petitioner to approach the High Court.

The policy under challenge was passed in light of the administration’s endeavour to promote eco-friendly transport. Therefore, it had stated that non-electric two wheelers would not be registered between February 10 and March 31 by the Registering and Licensing Authority.

The policy notified in September last year will be in effect for five years and during this time, efforts will be made to reduce and eventually stop registering fuel-run vehicles.

The petitioners sought a stay on the policy.
